Osteoarthiritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis in the UK, affecting over 8.75 million people. It’s a condition that causes joint pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility — most commonly in the knees, hips, hands, and spine. But despite what many people believe, osteoarthritis doesn’t mean you just have to “live with it.”

With the right physiotherapy approach, you can manage your symptoms, stay active, and continue doing the things you love.

What is

osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a natural “wear and repair” process that affects the joints over time. The cartilage that cushions your joints can gradually become thinner, and the surrounding structures (like muscles and ligaments) may also weaken. This can lead to pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion.

Common Symptoms of Osteoarthritis:

  • Joint stiffness, especially in the morning or after inactivity
  • Pain with movement or weight-bearing
  • Swelling or a grating sensation
  • Reduced strength or balance
  • Difficulty with everyday tasks — walking, climbing stairs, getting up from a chair

Osteoarthritis can affect anyone, but it’s especially common in those over 50, people with a history of joint injury, or those with physically demanding jobs.
